Read all about the only league match to be played amidst all the winter weather hooha last week...
In division 9, the Leeds 7th team players shook the snow off their feet, shrugged off the Christmas sloth and put in another classic attacking performance. This time Leeds also got the goals that have proved illusive, beating Sheffield Hallam 8th team away 5 - 1. Sheffield had done a good job clearing the snow and after a trip in driving sleet, the weather cleared to provide excellent playing conditions. Leeds started with 8 players (due to a lost car) and proceeded to dominate Sheffield with a dazzling display of two-touch passing hockey. Sheffield were bemused at the quality and speed of the lean and fit Leeds team, who felt under some pressure from a Coach who just happened to be in the crowd on the terraces. Rik broke through the packed defence and shaped up for a pass to Rob, but the keeper did not buy the dummy. Now committed to a shot at a well positioned goalie, Rik somehow found a gap to every one's surprise, including himself. Rob scored another goal to stun Sheffield who could not believe what was happening to them. In defence, Chris faced up to a short corner and triumphed. However, Sheffield got a goal back with the keeper a mile off the goal line (in Abbeydale Road). When reinforcements arrived, the players relaxed and momentum was lost. In the crowded Sheffield half, players started to indulge in heroic dribbles. At half time the Coach advised the team on the wisdom of trying to run through defenders and the benefits of the quick passing they had started with. The players took on the advice and played more team hockey, with Sarb and Nick dominating midfield and pressurising the Sheffield defence. Rob, Nick and Sam got in plenty of crosses for Josh and Luke to test the keeper. He saved a few well struck shots, but could not get to two from Josh, including a cheeky follow up to a hard shot from Vince. Sheffield threatened the Leeds goal just twice in the second half. Derek cut out a fierce cross brilliantly and the keeper parried a looping, mesmerising miss-hit that amused the crowd. Leeds got a bit bogged down in attacking down the left touchline and could not get the crosses in from there. Chris came from defence to show them the route to goal with a classic run down the right from full back and a glorious shot. Derek said that he was delighted with the win and the advice during and after from our new 7th team Coach. Report by Charles Mellor (some made up in the best traditions of sports journalism) |
