With the 09/10 league hockey season now over, how did our various teams fare? Find out in our review of the season.
Men's section
This has been a rebuilding season for Leeds Hockey Club, as several new coaches and a number of new players have joined the club at all levels during the year. This is particularly true for the Men's section, with newly appointed Director of Coaching Lewis Butcher taking over the Men's 1st team, along with Glenn Hayes and Jaspal Panesar coaching and managing the Men's 2s. For the 3s to 7s, player coach Chris Hardaker has once again worked tremendously hard all season, helping two of these teams to gain promotion.
Overall, Leeds have had a very respectable season in the league. The improvements in coaching standards, fitness levels and influx of new players have clearly helped strengthen the club. Final positions in the various leagues were as follows:
-
Men's 1st Team: North Div 1 finished 5th (10th last season)
-
Men's 2nd Team: Yorkshire Div 1 finished 4th (8th last season)
-
Men's 3rd Team: Yorkshire Div 3 finished 2nd (promoted)
-
Men's 4th Team: Yorkshire Div 4 finished 6th
-
Men's 5th Team: Yorkshire Div 7 finished 3rd (promoted)
-
Men's 6th Team: Yorkshire Div 8 finished 7th
-
Men's 7th Team: Yorkshire Div 9 finished 6th (pending other results)
With all the Yorkshire Men's leagues from Division 5 downwards being regionalised next season, we don't yet know how it will pan out for the lower teams. Suffice to say none of them have been relegated!
The Men's 2nd Team lost their 'League Cup A' final 1-0 to Driffield and the Men's 3rd/4th Team lost their 'League cup B' Final to Normanby Park 3-2. Both matches were played on April 24th
Women's section
The Women's section had a tough season but pulled through towards the end to finish on a high - giving plenty of hope and confidence for next season. Paul Rufus was coaching the Ladies 1s/2s (with help from Laura Smith) and both teams firmly held their positions in their respective leagues. Rick Goulsbra coached the 3s and 4s, helping the 3s successfully avoid relegation. However we could not stop the ladies 4s from being relegated, although this was largely due to the shortage of available regular players at this level.
Final positions in the league were as below:
-
Ladies 1st Team: Yorkshire Prem finished 5th
-
Ladies 2nd Team: Yorkshire Div 1 finished 6th
-
Ladies 3rd Team: Yorkshire Div 3 finished 9th
-
Ladies 4th Team: Yorkshire Div 5 finished 12th (relegated)
Alongside these sides, Leeds also had a Sunday Mixed team and several Indoor sides running - both of which will be continued next season.
During the summer, there are likely to be a number of competitive 'summer league' matches, a variety of summer 'tours' and potentially some fitness training sessions. More details will be posted on the website and emailed to members in due course.
