Simon Batty joined the club when he was just a young boy in ‘short shorts’. He’s grown a lot of facial hair since then but still wears the same shorts to this day. In fact, he only ever wears long trousers when it is officially too cold to play hockey.
Affectionately known as ‘Batty’ to all who know him, Simon was chairman of LHC from 2010 until 2021 and led the club with distinction during this time. You may find him at Weetwood on a hockey playing day, supporting our teams, umpiring on the pitch or socialising with friends, members and opposition players in The View Bar.
Phil has been at the Club since the early 90’s. He joined as he was always watching his Dad (Club stalwart Rod) play at Red Lane (the old Farsley Pitch).
Phil started playing in defence, worked his way up through the youth system and progressed to be a prolific forward. He has represented the club at every level, Captained some of the Men’s teams and is a qualified coach.
When asked to provide a comment about his time at the club Phil said:
“The club has been a central part of the Stubley household for many years. When I look back, I have seen the club from three Men’s teams to what it is now. The ambition of everyone involved in creating this Club I always find astounding. I can honestly say there is no club like us in the North of England”
Chris has been a member of the club since 2014 and became Club Secretary during the 2017/18 after serving as kit coordinator the previous season. When Chris is not busy dealing with club admin, he can be found captaining the Men’s 8s after finally giving into pressure from previous captains. Prior to joining the club, Chris was a member of Hull University Men’s Hockey Club (2011-2014) where he first took up hockey and now is only one of two people in the club who looks forward to an away day to Hull!

A member of Leeds Hockey Club for the past 17 seasons, Mike was persuaded to start playing again by Chris McPhillimy by creating a side to support the development of Juniors. He managed to last a season and a half before old age and aches and pains won the day.
Prior to joining Leeds Mike has previously played for Harrogate HC 1 XI for a number of years and before that played in the East League for Pelicans.
After retiring for a second time, Mike was asked by Simon Batty to manage the Men’s 1 XI for a season which very quickly became eight.
Mike has played a pivotal role as part of the Partnership with UoL and Beckett being a firm supporter of the effort to improve the clubs playing standards.
After standing down as Men’s 1 XI manager he have been Treasurer for the last five seasons.

Men’s Club Captain
Sam Mawer joined the club as a 12 year old in 2002, a lack of football talent meaning his dream of playing for Leeds United had to be abandoned.
After leaving the club in 2009 and playing two seasons in Australia and multiple in the North East, Sam returned to the club in a blaze of glory after losing his last match for Whitley Bay 9-1 against a Leeds team on their way to national league promotion!
Back at Leeds, Sam settled in the 2XI team and has been captain of the side since 2017 and took on the role of Club Captain in 2018. You will either find him plodding around in defence somewhere, kicking the ball a lot, or on the side-lines at Weetwood trying to tell the next generation about the good old days.

Phil picked up a hockey stick for the first time in the summer of 2018 at the Leeds Hockey Club Summer Knockabouts after avoiding sports at school. Having enjoyed the summer he then joined the Club and was safely selected for the Men’s 8XI where he can be found causing a safety concern most weekends and training sessions, quite ironic given his day job is in health and safety. This background led Phil to contact the committee to volunteer when, in the summer of 2020, England Hockey announced the requirement for each club in the country to have a COVID Officer.

Shannon started playing hockey at the age of 8 following some insistence from her Aunt that she’d enjoy it just as much as she loved football… needless to say the football boots were soon retired for a pair of astro turf trainers, although that sadly hasn’t stopped her from continuing to kick the ball at least once a game.
Following a successful four years playing with our partners Leeds Beckett University, including a couple of years captaincy and a year on the committee, Shannon joined Leeds Hockey Club two years ago and has since been involved with Women’s 3XI, 4XI, mixed summer hockey and now the committee as Communications Officer.

Ed started playing hockey aged 9 when his dentist asked his mother for him to play a sport less risky to his teeth than rugby, she picked hockey. Ever since then Ed has been hooked. Ed joined LHC in September 2013 and had two seasons free and easy before he stepped up to captain the Men’s 8 for two seasons. Following that he was one of the Social Secretaries between 2016 and 2018 before stepping into the social role again for the 2019/20 season along with the Communications role.
Ed is also a qualified umpire and coach (although due to work commitments he avoids the latter).
