Simon Batty

President

Simon Batty joined the club when he was just a young boy in ‘short shorts’. He’s grown a lot of facial hair since then but still wears the same shorts to this day. In fact, he only ever wears long trousers when it is officially too cold to play hockey.

Affectionately known as ‘Batty’ to all who know him, Simon was chairman of LHC from 2010 until 2021 and led the club with distinction during this time. You may find him at Weetwood on a hockey playing day, supporting our teams, umpiring on the pitch or socialising with friends, members and opposition players in The View Bar.

Phil Stubley

Chair

Phil has been at the Club since the early 90’s. He joined as he was always watching his Dad (Club stalwart Rod) play at Red Lane (the old Farsley Pitch).

Phil started playing in defence, worked his way up through the youth system and progressed to be a prolific forward. He has represented the club at every level, Captained some of the Men’s teams and is a qualified coach.

When asked to provide a comment about his time at the club Phil said:
“The club has been a central part of the Stubley household for many years. When I look back, I have seen the club from three Men’s teams to what it is now. The ambition of everyone involved in creating this Club I always find astounding. I can honestly say there is no club like us in the North of England”

Mike Pounder

Treasurer

A member of Leeds Hockey Club for the past 17 seasons, Mike was persuaded to start playing again by Chris McPhillimy by creating a side to support the development of Juniors. He managed to last a season and a half before old age and aches and pains won the day.

Prior to joining Leeds Mike has previously played for Harrogate HC 1 XI for a number of years and before that played in the East League for Pelicans.

After retiring for a second time, Mike was asked by Simon Batty to manage the Men’s 1 XI for a season which very quickly became eight.

Mike has played a pivotal role as part of the Partnership with UoL and Beckett being a firm supporter of the effort to improve the clubs playing standards.

After standing down as Men’s 1 XI manager he have been Treasurer for the last five seasons.

Shannon has been playing hockey for 20 years, moving through club, county and university systems (including our partner university, Leeds Beckett) before joining LHC in 2019.

Shannon has represented the club across the Women’s 3XI and 4XI, and has previously been on the committee as Communications Officer, and currently is captain of the Women’s 3XI in addition to Club Captain.

Few things in life are guaranteed, but Shannon A) giving the ball to a centre-forward at least once per game and B) finding her in The View Bar on a Saturday are exceptions to that!

Allie Beveridge

Women’s Club Co-Captain

Allie has played hockey on and off since age 11 but got properly hooked after joining our partner club at the University of Leeds. Whilst at university Allie played for (and captained) their 8XI.

Allie joined the Club in 2021 and has played for the Women’s 6XI and Women’s 7XI along with captaining in the Adel Women’s Summer League over the summer.

Sam Mawer

Men’s Club Co-Captain

Sam Mawer joined the club as a 12 year old in 2002, a lack of football talent meaning his dream of playing for Leeds United had to be abandoned.

After leaving the club in 2009 and playing two seasons in Australia and multiple in the North East, Sam returned to the club in a blaze of glory after losing his last match for Whitley Bay 9-1 against a Leeds team on their way to national league promotion!

Back at Leeds, Sam settled in the 2XI team and has been captain of the side since 2017 and took on the role of Club Captain in 2018. You will either find him plodding around in defence somewhere, kicking the ball a lot, or on the side-lines at Weetwood trying to tell the next generation about the good old days.

Dave Pearson

Umpires Co-Ordinator

Dave started his hockey career with LHC 22-ish seasons ago, playing mostly in what are now the Men’s 6XI and 7XI. Along the way he also captained both those teams, coached juniors for eight years, umpired club games and recently joined the YNE Neutral Umpire scheme where he achieved Level 2 qualification towards the end of the 2021/22 season.

As constant age-related injuries seem to be a permanent feature of Dave’s games these days, he has reluctantly conceded that his wild 1XI team hero dreams won’t actually happen and so will be concentrating mostly on neutral umpiring going forward.
